Szabo Vineyards strives to work in harmony with nature to protect the environment and its inhabitants, while producing the highest quality grapes possible. As stewards of the land, we practice a form of integrated pest management, which combines cultural, mechanical and biological methods to help control disease, insects and weeds. These practices include no-till farming, regulated deficit drip irrigation and cover cropping. Sustainable winegrowing practices help to reduce water and energy use, minimize the use of pesticides, build healthy soils, protect air quality, recycle natural resources and maintain the surrounding wildlife habitat. In 2004, Alex was awarded the Conservationist of the Year award by the National Conservation Resource Service of Nevada County.
Our vines face south and west and are on a vertical shoot positioning (VSP) trellis system with 6x9 foot spacing. Morning and evening breezes provide excellent wind drainage, and the snow melt waters that feed our vines are delivered from an irrigation ditch that predates California statehood. We are strong believers in canopy management to achieve balanced vines. In this way, we can actively manage the microclimate of the fruiting zone, which has a dramatic and positive impact on the quality of our fruit. We adhere to the Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices of the California Association of Winegrowers |
