The roots of the Szabo family lie in the town of Eger, Hungary, where there have been vineyards since Roman times and where they produce the famous Egri Bikaver (“Bull’s Blood”) wine. Legend has it that the name Egri Bikaver originated during battles with the Turks in 1522. The people of Eger were so successful in repelling the Turkish invasion that it was rumored they had been given red wine mixed with bull’s blood. That surely translates to a genetic predisposition for full-throttled, robust red wines! While living and working in several European countries for the better part of a decade, Alex (aka Sándor) developed a great appreciation for the finest European wines. His desire to produce only the best quality grapes and ultimately the best quality wine is derived from this experience. In addition to studying at UC Davis and consulting with experts in Zinfandel and Mediterranean climate grapes, Alex enlisted the aid of consultant Joe Damiano, a third-generation Italian-American Sierra Foothills winegrower. Joe is a graduate of the UC Davis School of Viticulture and has managed vineyards at Kendall-Jackson and at Indian Springs. |
